Writers have always had a particular relationship with hotels: they like to hide in hotels in order to write or find inspiration. Some of them even live in them, such as Albert Cossery’s case who stayed for 63 years in a hotel of the Latin Quarter… Many novels were written in hotels and hotels were the setting for many novels.
The Hôtel des Écrivains, formerly known as the Hôtel des Arts, and is located in the heart of a district which welcomes great editors and hosts the school of book industry, the school for book-sellers, the Crime Fiction Film Festival and the headquarters of the newspaper Le Monde. It offers the intimacy, serenity and conviviality writers are searching for…
But that is not the only reason why the hotel got its name: many famous writers, past and contemporary, left their footprints in this district located next to the Latin Quarter… Walk out of the hotel to meet Hemingway who will take you to the second-hand bookshops on the banks of the Seine. You will meet Victor Hugo, whose masterpiece, Les Misérables, mainly takes place in that arrondissement of Paris.
You can sense the presence of Stendhal, Joyce (his wife, a chamber maid he met while staying in an Irish hotel), Françoise Sagan, driving his Jaguar in place d’Italie, where he used to take the legendary National Route 7 that led to Saint-Tropez.
Nowadays, you will find authors and publishing houses such as La Découverte, Belfond, Nathan, Solar, Presses de la Cité and Flammarion.
